Artist | Robert Erskine FRBS
Scope | Design, Manufacture and Install
We have been working with Robert Erskine for many years on his renowned public art pieces,
this is the best so far. Converting Robert’s sketches and 1:50 macquette to a cost effective
design we manufactured The Shard from stainless steel, a unique applied surface which
mimics the shading tones of original sketches and will absorb as well as reflect the ambient
light, it faces due west and at sunset it is dramatic.. Using latest imaging technology and
computer aided design we were able to enlarge a finger print and laser cut at 250 times actual
size. After manufacture we delivered The Shard via Police escort across 3 counties, 8 weeks in
planning for the route alone.
The Jasper Square retail park is on the site of the former Wedgwood Alexandra pottery works which was built in 1886. The Shard represents a shard of pottery from Roman times, Robert found it on the site in an underground oven during excavations. It will leave evidence of human endeavour and creativity without doubt for many years to come. The Shard was unveiled by The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent and children of Mill Hill School, who also placed time capsules in a special structure within the garden, a time capsule was also placed in the Shard itself by Robert & Midas Employees.
