When is an access
cover not an access cover?
When it is over potable water.
It is now not possible to fit any cover to
potable water
installations if you consider recent guidelines from the Government
and DWI. Consideration should be given to the potential threat of
vandalism and other undesirable attack when choosing what type of
cover to fit.
For many years manufacturers have claimed
that there covers are the best for the application and the buyer
has had no formal specification or standard to refer to other than
the Salesmans spiel and or his/her own instinct. That is until
recently when the Water Industry in conjunction with the Loss prevention
Council (now part of the Building Research Establishment) established,
with some revisions to meet the water industrys requirements,
LPS1175 Cat 4.
This gives the specifier and purchaser a
minimum acceptable specification for access covers to
be used within potable water installations. Other enhanced features
should be given consideration such as material types to minimise
corrosion and maximise longevity, hygiene, Health & Safety,
user friendliness.
Access Covers should be considered as an
investment to protect assets rather than something that just
covers up a hole.
